Combined Dust Detection Algorithm for Asian Dust Events Over East Asia Using GK2A/AMI: a Case Study in October 2019

Abstract A combined algorithm comprising multiple dust detection methods was developed using infrared (IR) channels onboard the GEOstationary Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite 2A equipped with Advanced Meteorological Imager (GK2A/AMI). Six cloud tests brightness temperature difference (BTD) were utilized to reduce errors caused by clouds. For detecting storms, three standard BTD (i.e., $${BT}_{12.3}-{BT}_{10.5}$$ , $${BT}_{8.7}-{BT}_{10.5}$$ and $${BT}_{11.2}-{BT}_{10.5}$$ ) polarized optical depth index (PODI). The normalizes indices for detection, adopts weighted combinations of depending on observation time (day/night) surface type (land/sea). results produced as quantitative confidence factors displayed false color imagery, applying a dynamic enhancement background reduction (DEBRA). qualitatively assessed comparing it RGB imageries ground-based lidar data. especially improved discontinuity in weak advection sea considerably reduced alarms compared previous monitoring methods. validation, we used aerosol thickness (AOT) fine mode fraction (FMF) derived from low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites daytime. both severe weakened cases, probability (POD) ranged 0.667 0.850 indicated that detects more potential pixels than other satellites. In particular, advantageous storms passing over warm humid Yellow Sea height small AOT.
